What I'm interested in:
- Dinosaur Expeditions
Robert has consistently garnered the respect of the scientific community since his first paleontological expedition in 1988 when he documented the discovery of sauropod tracks (dinosaur footprints) in Texas and while excavating in the Arctic circle, uncovered a juvenile hadrosaur. Most recently on a secret dig in Mexico, Robert discovered the first dinosaur skull (a Hadrosaur) in that country. Dunlap has just completed his latest documentary, Mass Extinctions. With the participation of some of the foremost scientists in the field today, including Dr. Bruce Bohor, Dr. Glenn Izett, Dr. James I. Kirkland and Dr. Jack Wolfe, the two hour film
explains how 99.9% of all the species on this planet have been lost and how we are endangering the remaining .1%. Mass Extinctions details one of the prevailing theories of what really happened to the dinosaur and whether it can happen again. Some of the dinosaurs Robert chronicles in the film are from the same period as those featured in Steven Spielbergs movie Jurassic Park.
Dunlap recently documented the first western equatorial expedition in Saltillo, Mexico. In addition to his hadrosaur skull discovery, a small dinosaur claw which may indicate a new species was uncovered, along with several carnosaur teeth and vertebrae,
as well as the largest ceratopsian toe found to date and a section of dinosaur skin. Until now, only skin impressions have been found, but this dig turned up nearly an entire carcass of skin.
- Filmmaking and Acting
Prior to traveling the globe studying fossil finds, Dunlap built an impressive resume of acting credits which range from the Academy Award winning feature They Shoot Horses,Dont They? to the highly-rated Bob Hope Buys NBC television Special. Dunlap remains in constant demand for television commercials; among the scores of national advertising spots in which he has appeared, he was TVs Orkin man for over eight years. He can currently be seen as one dealer in the new Chrysler minivan ads. When the Screen Actors Guild strike came in 1980, I decided to do something with my cinema degree and put together a live-action , short subject film titled Anton, Dunlap explains. It was a critical success at the Cannes Film Festival and aired on Showtime. It has since become somewhat of a cult classic on home video.
Roberts subsequent short films garnered numerous awards at film festivals across the United States and aired in more than 75 countries. Then-president Reagan presented Dunlap with an award from the U.S. Chamber of Commerce in recognition of his entrepreneurial spirit.
Dunlap eventually went on to produce, direct and write the documentary film Impact:Earth, which explores the influences of extraterrestrial objects on earth. This was followed by two more documentaries, both of which aired on the discovery Channel, Alaska: The Great Land, (narrated by Pernel Roberts) a visual adventure tour of the 49th state, And Dinosaur: The Arctic Expedition, which also aired on PBS, chronicling the discovery of the first dinosaur species inside the Arctic Circle. In studying the earths past, we learn that man is creating his own extinction, Dunlap warns. I try to structure my films in laymans terms so that everyone can understand the importance of saving the planet.
- Travel
The next adventure includes South America and the South Pacific.
